Alice Scully, Photography

Alice Scully came to photography late in life almost by accident. Although her father was a professional photographer and technical editor for Camera 35 and Modern Photography, she never picked up a camera until a few years ago.

After a 30-year career in psychology Alice wanted to learn something new. She enrolled at Boise State University to gain computer skills and learn technical writing. While there she literally stumbled across students in the hallway holding wet prints fresh from the darkroom. She was intrigued and knew she wanted to be in that class. This experience was the entry point into her new dream life of traveling-from southwest Idaho to Mexico to Italy-writing stories and capturing adventures in photographs.

Alice's photographs have been twice chosen for the cover image of Boise Journal magazine and by Cambridge University Press for the cover image of the textbook, Sociology and the Law. Her stories and photographs have appeared in Boise Journal, Boise Home, McCall magazine and McCall Home. Her work has been shown at the annual miniature photography exhibition of Toronto's Praxis Gallery and the American Association of University Women's Art Show in McCall, where she won the People's Choice Award. During the summer on Saturday mornings Alice can be found on the Grove Plaza at the Capital City Farmers Market in downtown Boise.

While Alice constantly sees compositions she wants to photograph, her eye is invariably drawn to the form and pattern of lines. Her favorite photographs show how lines create and define space to form an aesthetic balance of shapes within that space.

The photographs selected for this show are assembled into four groupings of three images each. Alice has matched a triad of photographs she took in Italy with three images from a series she did specifically for women's dressing rooms and closets.  Another triad are three restful and serene landscape photographs juxtaposed with three bold and colorful Boise iconic images.
